Art in Therapy Workshop
Saturday 13th September
10am - 4pm
Online 6 Hour CPD

This Art in Therapy course invites mental health professionals to explore the power of creative expression as a therapeutic tool. Through engaging in three hands-on techniques—Ink Art, Mandala Creation, and Therapy Stone Making—participants will discover how visual art can help clients express complex emotions and inner experiences that may be difficult to articulate with words. The course also delves into the symbolic meanings of colours and shapes, practical mindfulness through art, and the therapeutic value of personal reflection. Participants will complete three meaningful art pieces and gain deeper insight into their own emotional landscapes. The course fosters a safe, supportive space for sharing and growth, while providing a ready-to-use six-session art therapy template plan to implement in client work. By the end, professionals will feel equipped to use art to enhance communication, emotional understanding, and healing in their therapeutic practice.

By the end of this workshop, you will:

1.Understand how to express emotions through art - Discover how creating visual art can help your clients' express feelings, thoughts, and experiences that words may not fully capture.

2.Understand and explore colour and shape meanings - Learn how colours and shapes can hold personal and symbolic meaning for your clients.

3.Understand practical mindfulness through creative work - Experience the calming and grounding effects of making a mandala—a meditative art form that encourages focus and inner peace.

4.Gain insight into yourself - Use your art to explore personal themes and patterns, leading to greater self-awareness and emotional understanding.

5.Learn how to create three meaningful art pieces - Complete and take home an ink artwork (face to face workshops only), a personal mandala, and a hand-decorated therapy stone as reminders of your creative journey.

6.Connect and share in a safe space - Participate in open, respectful conversations where you can reflect on your process and support others in their expression.

7.Understand the healing power of art - Leave with tools and inspiration to use art for well-being, relaxation, and emotional growth beyond this workshop.

8.Learn how to create a six-session art therapy plan - Leave with a complete six-session template that you can incorporate at any time with your clients.

The Ink Art and Therapy Stones are two great examples of what you will be making on the day, along with your own Mandala creation.

This ink artwork was created by one of my 14-year-old clients, a trauma survivor. At the time, they found it challenging to express their feelings and make sense of the world. Through the process of creating this piece, they found a safe and non-threatening way to communicate what words could not. Each colour was a representation of their feelings and emotions, which led to some amazing reflective work.

This box of therapy stones was a thoughtful gift from a teacher who attended the Art in Therapy workshop. She shared that she had used them with the children in her class to support emotional regulation—and hoped they would be just as helpful in my therapy sessions.
